We often consider the New Testament, at least big part of it like something connected to future and this future is not clear. The criminal who was crucified next by Christ thought this way too: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” How
was he thinking about that, it is not quite clear when it will be and how it will be. But just in case, he asks and hopes. I don't think he thought that it will be soon. Most likely he asked about a future paradise, had a hope about some far away future.
But look what Jesus answered him: “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” He talks not about a visionary future but about this moment. You can of course object to it saying that Jesus says so because He knows that they both will die soon and they will be on the other side of death. But Howard Hageman notices that meaning of Jesus' words were not about that they will die and ended up in paradise. His words have the same meaning if they would live another 50 years. It is about new relationships, which they get because of their faith now. "To be with Jesus in paradise" is not only a promise for future but an opportunity for a perfect life right now.
To be with Christ no matter when and how is to be in paradise. Undoubtedly this life will have better colors on the other side of this imperfect life. But it starts already here and now. Repented criminal got this paradise while hanging on that cross next to Jesus.
For a person who has faith in Christ in the midst of physical pain and sufferings can be full of peace and joy.
I want to finish with a phrase of Hageman: It is only presence of Christ in our life makes paradise reality even on a cross. If we will trust Jesus and open our heart to His presence and power He can open a door of paradise for you here and now.
