READ: Mark 4:35-41, Psalm 77:1
So many times as a mom I feel like, “I’ve got this.” Getting into routines, finding a flow to life, and taking care of little ones results in a certain amount of confidence. But then the other day my son was sent to the vice-principal’s office because of a bad choice. My heart was
heavy as we talked. I realized, “I can’t do this!?” I didn’t know how to help him and it felt overwhelming. It wasn’t until the storm hits and we start to try to handle things on our own that we realize: we don’t have this!
In our passage, today, did the disciples try to handle the storm by themselves first? And where was Jesus? Asleep in the bottom of the boat. How did the disciples feel when they went to the bottom of the boat to find Jesus asleep, seemingly unaware of their immediate death? Mark tells us.
“Teacher! Don’t you care that we’re going to die?”Mark 4:38
The disciples woke Jesus up with an accusation. Circumstances can cause us to question God’s goodness in our lives. When my friend suffers through cancer, when my daughter with special needs has no diagnosis, when death hits unexpectedly and my young friend loses her first baby - my heart whispers: God, do you really care?
He does and we have proof.
Peace. It was peace Jesus spoke into the storm and it is peace Jesus speaks into the storms we face. The physical peace Jesus brought to the waves and wind are proof He can calm the spiritual storms. Jesus was in complete control and He’s still in control. Nothing is out of His reach, and peace is ours during the toughest storms.
What storm are you facing today? Do you feel abandoned by God, like the disciples felt? Will you trust the one who calmed the sea and wind to handle your spiritual storm? The reason why the disciples didn’t need to fear was found in the very first verse of this passage.
“On that day, when evening had come, he told them, ‘Let’s cross over to the other side of the sea.’” Mark 4:35
Jesus promised they would get to the other side! They could trust His Word and we can too. Remember, dear mama, Jesus promises to get us to the other side.
When the storms of anxiety are threatening our lives, we can lift our eyes to the Savior and praise His name. Sometimes I turn some worship music on, ignore the sighs from my children, and turn up the volume as I wash dishes. Jesus isn’t on the shore of the sea watching us struggle. He is in the midst of the boat, ready to calm our anxiety when we reach out and ask Him.
When the storms of life threaten to overwhelm you, remember Jesus is in control and peace can be found in the midst of fear.

Questions to ponder:
1. What storm are you facing today?
2. How can God help you to be calm, in the middle of this storm?
3. How does it help your heart to remember Jesus is in complete control?

Prayer prompt:
Lord, Jesus, because you calmed the storm…
